Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme lets eligible people to use their mobility allowance to lease a brand-new car. It's a simple, all-inclusive solution that covers insurance, servicing, breakdown cover, and most running costs — all in one package. The aim is to make every journey smoother, safer, and more independent.

Which cars are available on the Motability Scheme?

The Motability Scheme offers a wide choice of vehicles, from agile city cars to spacious SUVs and electric models. Many can be adapted to suit your accessibility needs. With insurance, servicing and maintenance already included, getting behind the wheel is easy and stress-free.

How do I apply?

Applying is quick and straightforward. If you receive a qualifying mobility allowance with at least 12 months remaining, you're ready to begin. Just:

  1. Check you are eligible
  2. Choose your preferred Motability car
  3. Visit a Motability approved retailer

Your Motability specialist will handle everything — from the paperwork to getting your new car ready.

How does the Motability Scheme work?

Your mobility allowance is exchanged for a three-year lease on a new car. Motability Scheme will receive your payments straight from your allowance provider, to make paying simple. Some models require no extra cost, while others may have an Advance Payment based on specification.

You also get an annual mileage allowance and can add up to three drivers. When your lease ends, you simply choose your next car.

What's included with a Motability vehicle?

A Motability lease is designed to be completely worry-free, covering:

  • Insurance
  • Servicing & maintenance
  • Breakdown cover
  • Tyre and windscreen replacement
  • Support from accredited Motability specialists

Many models also include the latest safety tech, driver-assist systems, and easy-access features. Adaptations are available too — many at no extra cost.

Are automatic cars available?

Yes — the Motability Scheme offers a strong selection of automatic vehicles across different fuel types, including hybrid and electric. Automatics are ideal if you prefer a smoother, more effortless drive. Availability changes each quarter, so your Motability specialist can help match the right model to your needs.

How often do prices change?

Motability pricing updates every January, April, July and October. These quarterly adjustments reflect model availability, specification updates, and any changes to Advance Payments. Your retailer will always have the latest details.

How much does it cost to get started?

Most of your lease is covered by your mobility allowance. Some vehicles may require an Advance Payment depending on model and trim.

Your lease includes:

  • Insurance
  • Servicing
  • Breakdown cover
  • Tyres & windscreen cover

Many adaptations to support easier access or driving are also available.

Motability Scheme Changes from 1 July?

From 1 July 2026, the UK Government is introducing VAT and Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) on parts of new Motability leases. These changes increase the cost of delivering the Scheme, so Motability is adjusting some of the lease inclusions as a result.

Do these changes affect existing Motability customers?

No.

If you already have a Motability lease, nothing changes.

The updates only apply to new orders placed on or after 1 July 2026.

What are the main changes to new leases?
  1. Mileage Allowance
    • 30,000 miles over a 3-year car lease
    • 50,000 miles over a 5-year Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV) lease. Customers can pay for extra mileage if needed.
  2. Tyre Replacement Policy
    • Up to 6 tyres included during a 3-year lease (up to 4 for accidental damage)
    • Up to 10 tyres included during a 5-year WAV lease (up to 6 for accidental damage)
  3. European Breakdown Cover
    • A VE103 certificate is required for travel abroad
    • A £22 admin fee will apply for new orders
    • RAC will continue to provide European cover
  4. Tax Changes From 1 July 2026:
    • VAT will be applied to top-up payments (i.e., Advance Payments above the mobility allowance)
    • Insurance Premium Tax (IPT) will apply to insurance on most vehicles (except those permanently adapted for wheelchair or stretcher users)
    • These changes are the main reason lease-related costs are increasing.
  5. Advance Payments May Increase — Average Advance Payments are expected to rise by around £400 due to VAT and IPT changes.
What is NOT changing?

Your Motability lease will continue to include:

  • Insurance for up to three named drivers
  • Servicing and maintenance
  • Breakdown cover
  • Support from the Motability team

Motability emphasises that the core all-inclusive package remains protected.

Do these changes apply in Scotland?

Changes will also apply to Scottish customers from 1 September 2026. More information can be found here: https://www.motability.co.uk/changes

Why are these changes happening?

These adjustments follow UK Government tax reforms to ensure consistency with other leasing providers. Motability has updated the Scheme to keep it sustainable while protecting what matters most for disabled customers.
